Crawler Dozer Inspection Guide: What to Check Before You Buy
A used crawler dozer can be one of the best purchases you make, or one of the most expensive mistakes. The difference comes down to what you checked before you signed anything.
This guide walks through every system to inspect, in order. Bring it with you and work through it item by item. If something does not pass, you have leverage to negotiate or a reason to walk away.

Before You Start
A few ground rules.

- Inspect cold first. A warm machine hides a lot. Arrive before the seller starts it up if you can.
- Bring someone with you. Operational checks need one person in the cab and one outside observing.
- Block the tracks and lower the blade flat to the ground before you approach the undercarriage or climb on the machine. The parking brake was not set and the blade had been left raised instead of lowered to the ground. That same hazard exists any time someone is near the tracks of a dozer that is not fully secured, not just during operation.
- Do not skip systems. The most expensive problems are often the ones you have to look for.
If the seller will not let you run the machine, walk away. No exceptions.
System 1: Undercarriage and Tracks
Start here. This is the single most expensive system on a crawler dozer to replace, and it is the easiest to overlook on a quick walk-around because it sits low and often hides wear under packed dirt.

- Walk both tracks end to end. Check track shoes and grousers for cracking, bending, or uneven wear side to side.
- Check track sag at the midpoint on level ground against the tension spec in the operator’s manual. - Inspect rollers and idlers for flat spots, leaking seals, and looseness at the mounting.
- Check sprocket teeth for hooking or a mushroomed shape at the base, a sign the sprocket has been running against worn bushings.
- Look at the link and bushing surfaces for scalloping or pitting rather than smooth, even wear.
- Ask what terrain the machine worked. Rock, concrete, and demolition sites wear undercarriage two to three times faster than dirt or turf.

- Drive forward and reverse on flat ground. Listen for grinding or clunking from either track.
- Confirm both tracks run evenly and the machine does not wander to one side.
- Turn in both directions and watch for one track hesitating or grabbing instead of turning smoothly.

System 2: Blade and Cylinders

- Check the cutting edge and end bits for wear. Measure remaining thickness against a new edge if you can.
- Grab the blade at both corners and rock it gently while watching the pin connections for play.
- Inspect the lift, tilt, and angle cylinder rods for pitting or scoring, and check the cylinder bodies for leaks at the rod seal.
- If the blade pitches or tilts through a linkage rather than cylinders alone, check that linkage for play too.
Machine running
- Raise the blade fully and hold it under no load for two to three minutes. A blade that drifts down has failing cylinder seals.
- Cycle tilt and angle functions repeatedly and listen for knocking or hesitation.
- Lower the blade to the ground and confirm it sits flat. A blade that favors one corner points to a bent frame or worn pin.

System 3: Hydraulic System
Hydraulic repairs are one of the most common major expenses on a used crawler dozer, and many problems show up before you start the engine.

- Look for oil on the ground under the hydraulic pump, the cylinders, and every hose run.
- Check the dipstick or sight glass. Clean fluid is amber to light brown. Dark, milky, or burnt fluid is a problem.
- Rub the fluid between your fingers. Grit or metal particles mean internal wear.
- Inspect hoses for cracking, bulging, or chafing, especially where they route near the blade or ripper.
Machine running
- Cycle the blade through every function repeatedly under load and listen for whining or knocking.
- If the machine has a ripper, extend and retract it and hold it under load, watching for drift.
- Watch every hose and fitting again once the system is fully pressurized for new leaks.

System 4: Engine
Cold inspection
- Pull the dipstick. Milky or foamy oil means coolant is mixing in, usually a head gasket or cracked block.
- Check the coolant reservoir for oil contamination and the air filter for dust and neglect.
- Inspect belts, hoses, and radiator fins for damage or packed debris.
Starting the machine
- Start it cold and idle five to ten minutes. Light grey or white smoke on startup is normal and clears within a minute.
- Black smoke means incomplete combustion. Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil.
- Listen for knocking. Light valve tick is normal; deep knocking is not.
Once warm
Drive forward and backward on flat ground. Note any hesitation or loss of power. Shut down and check underneath for new fluid.

System 5: Final Drives and Steering Clutches
A crawler dozer turns by driving each track independently. On most machines, that happens through a final drive and steering clutch or brake assembly on each side. Hydrostatic-drive dozers use independent hydraulic motors per track instead, but the inspection goal is the same: confirm both sides respond evenly.

- Check both final drive housings for oil weeping or leaks at the seals.
- Check fluid level and condition in each final drive housing if it is accessible through a dipstick or check plug.
- Inspect steering clutch or brake linkage for wear, corrosion, or slack.
Machine running
- Turn sharply in both directions on level ground and listen for grinding, slipping, or a delayed response from either track. A steering clutch that has slipped under heavy work can scorch, so a burning smell during a turn is worth stopping to investigate.
- Compare track speed side to side while driving straight. A track that consistently lags points to a slipping clutch or a worn final drive.
- Test that the parking brake holds the machine on whatever slope is available.

Final drive rebuild runs $5,000 to $15,000 per side. Steering clutch or brake repair runs $2,000 to $6,000 per side. Because a dozer has two independent final drives, a seller who only has service records for one side should lower your offer, not just raise a question.
System 6: Cab and Controls
- Operate every control: the blade joystick, ripper control if equipped, pedals, switches, and the horn.
- Compare wear on the pedals, seat, and joystick grips to the hour meter reading. Worn controls with low hours is a red flag.
- Check the seat, windows for cracks, and the headliner and floor for water staining.
- Test heat and air conditioning, and confirm warning lights and gauges work at startup.
- Ask about telematics data if the machine has it. Hour tracking through telematics is much harder to alter than a manual meter, and a gap between the two is worth asking about directly.

Cab and control repairs vary widely, but worn controls paired with a low hour meter is often the first sign the hours have been altered, which changes the value of the entire machine, not just the cab.
When to Bring a Professional
If you are not comfortable evaluating these systems, or the machine is high-value enough to justify it, hire a third-party inspector. A professional inspection runs $500 to $1,200 and can surface what is easy to miss without tools: a proper track wear percentage measured with a gauge instead of eyeballed, final drive fluid analysis, and hydraulic pressure testing. Above $75,000, a professional inspection is worth the cost. The fee is almost always less than the first surprise repair, and on a machine this size, that first repair is rarely small.
Red Flags That Should Stop the Deal
Some findings are reasons to walk away unless the price reflects the problem clearly:
